Talking to reporters in MNF office, Saiha today, the District MNF President said, the balance amount yet to be paid to the contractor as recorded by the last District Council headed by Mr. N. Viakhu was 40 lakh rupees while payment made by the present District Council for clearance of the balance was 130 lakh rupees.

The Mara, Lai and Chakma autonomous district councils have been demanding direct Central funding for decades but could not succeed as all the political parties except the ruling Congress party opposed the demand.

The officials said that the MHA had recently sent a letter to the state chief secretary Van Hela Pachuau to comment on the proposal for direct funding.

A meeting of the leaders of the three autonomous district councils held at south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai town on Friday last lauded the proposal of the MHA and also decided to meet President Pratibha Patil during her visit to Aizawl on September 23 and 24 and proposed to submit a memorandum demanding a separate Rajya Sabha member for the three autonomous district councils.

In reply to the Opposition Member, Mr. NL Hmunsanga, the Executive Member in charge of Education, Mr. K. Hrahmo informed the House that 40 Schools under the District Council have been electrified so far with the fund received under SSA. He also said that there is no fund released this year for construction of School buildings under SSA so far.

In reply to the question asked by Mr. B. Pasia, the Chief Executive Member, Mr. S. Khipo informed the House that revenue receipt from all sources during the current financial year is 40 lakh, 70 thousand rupees. Of these, about 20 lakh have been spent so far.

The House had to devote a few hours to settle the demand of the opposition members as the Chairman, Mr. FC Zase objected the demand and told them that it was against the rules and procedures of conduct of business in the House.

Meanwhile the stage has been set for polling tomorrow in the remaining 72 Village Councils which will begin from 7 a.m and close at 4 in the afternoon.

The Government has also declared the polling day as a closed holiday in the entire Saiha District to enable all the 33696 voters to exercise their franchise. No untoward incident is reported from any corner so far. As already stated, the Returning Office in each polling station are to take up counting just after the close of the polling and the result will be announced by them.
