Earthquake can rock Mizoram anytime: Scientist
Aizawl,| Apr 14 2010 (UNI) – As Mizoram falls under earthquake vulnerable zone, a massive earthquake has become a cause of great concern for Mizoram as it could cause huge collateral damage to the unplanned structures in the state capital.
How the people of Mizoram in general and residents of Aizawl in particular should prepare for a massive earthquake was the main agenda of a distinguished lecture series organised by Zoram Research Foundation at the I&PR auditorium here today.
Speaking on the topic ‘Earthquake Potential in Mizoram’, state Education Minister Lalsawta emphasised the need for preparedness in case of earthquake.
”As Mizoram falls under earthquake intensity zone V, we have to give a serious thought on earthquake, its prevention and disaster management. Extensive public awareness is crucial,” he added.
”We should be prepared to face this threat very bravely,” he said.
A renowned Mizo seismologist based in US, Dr Lalliana Mualchin was the distinguished speaker at the day-long programme.
Giving a presentation on ‘Potentials and Implications of Damaging Earthquake in Mizoram’, Dr Mualchin underlined that earthquake could occur anytime in Mizoram but no one could predict when. ”Mizoram, among other NE states, is under seismic zone V, the highest earthquake risk zone in India. A massive earthquake as high as eight magnitude on the Richter Scale can occur anytime in Mizoram. Though I cannot predict at what time it will strike, I am sure it will do,” the scientist said.
Dr Mualchin, the seismic consultant to the Mizoram government, said he was preparing Mizoram seismic map. The state required more sophisticated equipment to study earthquake in Mizoram, he added.
”With all these unplanned structures, the disaster, which can be caused by an earthquake in Aizawl, is unpredictable. It will be worse than what we can think of,” said Mr Lalrinzuala, an architect in Aizawl.
