Mizoram govt deports 162 Myanmarese nationals
Aizawl, Dec 23 (PTI) Mizoram police arrested 367 Myanmarese nationals for breaking law and 162 of them have been deported to Myanmar since December 11, 2008, officials said here today.
Out of the deported Myanmarese nationals, 33 were indicted in narcotic trafficking cases, they said, adding no one has been handed over to the military authorities of that country.
Myanmar shares 404-km-long porous international border with Mizoram and thousands of Chins from that country enter Mizoram due to different reasons including shelter from the military junta and economic reasons like smuggling and drug trafficking.
State Excise department sources said heroin trafficking through the Myanmar border has been on the rise during the past one year and more contraband was seized during the period compared to last year.
