Mizoram observes Fire Prevention Week

AIZAWL – Observation of fire prevention week begins all over Mizoram today. In the main inauguration function held in Information Department’s Auditorium, the Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla said, protection of the forest from fire is the duty of everyone to sustain the new generation.

Recalling rampant forest fire during the last year, the Chief Minister asked the villages to complete burning of new jhums during February. He also underlined the need to educate the new generation towards protection of forest and wild life.

The Environment and Forest Minister, Mr. H. Rohluna also addressed the function and said, protection of forest should not be left only to the Forest Department. The people are to aware that it is the duty of everyone.

The meeting was also addressed by the Chairman of Sub-Committee on State Level Fire Prevention Committee, Mr. Lal Thanzara and the Central YMA Vice President, Mr. C. Zoramliana.

In Champhai District
, observation of the week was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Vijay Kumar Bidhuri at a function in Venglai Community Hall. Addressing the gathering in Mizo, the Deputy Commissioner asked the people to make effort to extinguish the fire in case they come across forest fire and report the incident to the Police Control Room immediately. He also asked the Village Councils to make a stock of water to enable the people to extinguish the fire immediately.

In Serchhip, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. H. Darzika inaugurated the fire prevention week and asked the people to try their level best to get the first prize in prevention of fire during this year.

He also underlined the need for creation of fire prevention awareness among the general mass. In Kolasib District, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. R. Liankima inaugurated the week at a function held in Diakkawn Square. He asked all villages to participate in the awareness drive launched from today.

In Mamit District, observation of fire prevention week is yet to begin with campaign in rural areas. Programmes for the campaign have been chalked out in the meeting held yesterday under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Zothankhuma. The campaign involving officials, NGOs and the Village Councils will cover a number of villages.

In Lunglei,
the week observation campaign begins from next Tuesday to cover selected 10 villages which are prone to fire. These are Putlungasih, Tawipui South, Lungrang South, South Vanlaiphai, Thingsai leh Tarpho, Cherhlun, Bunghmun, Haulawng, Hnahthial and Lungsen villages.

In Lawngtlai District, observation of the week was inaugurated this morning by Addl. DC, Mr. Vanlalngena at the function held in Areopagi.

In Saiha, fire prevention week was already inaugurated yesterday byt the PHE Minister, Mrs. S. Hiato. Addressing the function, the Minister asked the people to make a concerted effort for protection of forest and wild lives in it.

In Saiha District, Mara Autonomous District Council and MTP (Mara Thyutlia Py), the largest NGO have already started joint campaign in rural areas to create awareness in fire prevention.
