Rs.221.48 crore Alotted to NE states for forest development

Agartala, Dec 7 : The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has released funds amounting to Rupees 221.48 crore to the eight northeasten states during the years 2007-10 to implement National Aforestation Programme for regeneration of degraded forests.

An official document here said the funds were released to the Forest Development Agencies under the scheme during last three years and the current year (upto 30/10/2009) during Eleventh Five year plan.

The National Aforestation Programme (NAP), a Centrally sponsored scheme, is being implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Forests through a two-tier decentralised mechanism of Forst Development Agency (FDA) at Forest Division level and Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMCs) at the village level.

To strenghen the ongoing NAP the government has approved a proposal to strengthen the ongoing centrally sponsored NAP.

Of the total Rs 221.48 crore fund released to the NE states, Mizoram was on the top of the table receiving Rs 52.17 crore followed by Assam with Rs 36.18 crore, Manipur came third getting Rs 33.73 crore.

Sikkim bagged the fourth position getting Rs 31.32 crore. The smallest amount wen to Arunachal Pradesh at Rs 11.56 crore, Tripura 12.81 crore and Meghalaya Rs 16.14 crore.
