Violence against women discussed in Mizoram

27 November 2009: Forty people attended the ‘International day for stop violence against women’ observed at the Archive Hall, Aizawl capital of northeast state of Mizoram in India on November 25.

The programme was organized by Women against Violence (WAV). The invitees were representatives of migrant Burmese women, Women’s League of Chinland and Burmese Civil Society. The participants discussed violence against women and ways and means to prevent it.

“We are ready to help women, who face violence. At the same time we need help from men as we cannot achieve this task alone. We would like to cooperate and coordinate with other women’s organizations,” said a WAV member.

Women Against Violence was set up in January 2006 by five women. It has been working with the Women’ League of Chinland (WLC).

During the function, some representatives talked at length on the history of violence against women and how to prevent such violence and protect women in different areas and society at large. They decided to initiate steps to stop violence against women in Burma.

The programme also decided to create awareness among Burmese women, who are working as domestic helps, weavers, and shop keepers in Aizawl, in Mizoram.
